Who Are The Lauriston Loyal?
The Lauriston Loyal Rangers Supporters Club was born on the M8 (Eastbound) after Ranger's dramatic title clinching victory over Aberdeen at Ibrox, in 1992. Two Edinburgh University students, Johnny Ball and Steve Bonsor had followed their team all over the country that season, only to be denied a ticket for that final, all important game. Although they, and a few thousand others, enjoyed an impromtu street-party during and after the match, the lads felt somewhat cheated by failing to gain admission to the stadium. On their way home, they resolved to form a supporters club for the following season, and thus increase their chances of obtaining tickets for future games.
The following week the two lads plus like minded friends, gathered in Doctors' Bar, Teviot Place, Edinburgh to discuss their idea. The result was a fledgling Supporter's club, to be named the Lauriston Loyal, after the street in which the founder members had their student accomodation.
During the first two years of its life the LLRSC evolved into a vibrant, little club, providing tickets for its members, with regular meetings on the first Thursday of every month in the Guildford Arms, Register Street, Edinburgh, and numerous social events. During this time the club was based almost exclusively in Edinburgh, however, as the members completed their university courses they began to scatter throughout the U.K. Nowadays, the club boasts members from throughout Scotland, Northern Ireland and England.
Today the club membership numbers around twenty. We have get-togethers three or four times per season, when we deal with any official business, watch Rangers and generally socialise. Our AGM is always held on Scottish Cup Final day, with the hoped-for itinery being AGM in the morning, watch Rangers win the Cup in the afternoon, and the End of Season meal in the evening.
